The home was built for the engineer and architect Patrick Gartmann and was erected between two dwellings in a special topography high above the Rhine valley on the Hachwang slope near Chur in the canton of Graubünden. The monolithic construction is based on a single-layered construction of wall and ceiling, ie there is no layering of load-bearing and insulating components. This is of great importance for the uniform design of a building and requires a building material that combines load-bearing capacity, insulation values, and optics. The living room has a magnificent view of Chur and the mountains, a bedroom with a bathroom and a staircase in the north-south direction.


 

The architect Gartmann developed together with the companies Liapor and Calanda Beton the so-called insulation concrete, which is a lightweight concrete made of a mixture of cement, as well as expanded clay beads and recycled glass granules. The production of expanded clay such as expanded glass takes place after a similar granulation and combustion process. Expanded clay has a moderately rough and closed surface and a uniform, fine pore structure inside. The expanded glass is a mineral, fiber-free and ecological material with a fine-pored structure and a closed surface, which is used as a recycled glass. For both materials, the low densities provide very good thermal properties. Air pockets ensure high thermal insulation and thus contribute to energy savings. The compressive strength can be matched to the thermal insulation.
